Inspired by the stone dwellings that were scattered across the Scottish coastline during the iron age, and nearby at Dun Carolway, the Broch can only be described as unique with modern day comfort transplanted within the style of an ancient ruin.

The Broch stand three stories high and commands views over the wooded Borve Valley direct towards the distant ruin of an iron age citadel, in keeping with the ancient tradition of having a network of keeps within line of sight. The Broch pushed the boundaries of dry-stone wall methods with the base stones being nearly 2ms wide, before tapering upwards. The roof is crowned with turf, and the Broch is entered across a slate draw-bridge.

A raw minimalist design has been maintained throughout the interior.

The Kitchen and dining area are on the ground floor, where a wood-burning stove can provide some cosy ambience, but it is little needed: an air-source heat pump provides under-floor heating throughout. You head upstairs by treading on steps shaped from windblown beech trees protruding from the walls, and the linking banister is an art-work in itself, made from iron rendered into an undulating pattern, interspersed with glass icons.

The middle floor is the location of the sitting room and main bathroom. It is wide and spacious, and on cold nights, extra heat can be derived from a second fireplace, the mantel made from the beams of an old wharf.

The top floor is the location of a bespoke, superking four poster bed, directly beneath a circular skylight through which one can view the stars. It is also a place for commanding views of the Broch’s many aspects, the rich woodland of Borve valley. The two lochs beneath the hillside. And of course the north Atlantic. Throughout the vast main windows, there is little human habitation on view. The Broch is a place that offers couples true calm and solitude.

The Broch is open all year round for weekly bookings. Short stays of 3 or 4 nights are also available.  Check-in days are Friday and Tuesday.

Unfortunately we are unable to accept bookings for guests with children or pets in the Broch.

Please note The Broch is strictly no smoking or vaping.

Things to do:

During your stay, why not also take one of our boat trips to the secluded, uninhabited Isle of Taransay? These operate during the summer period, weather depending.

Visit the many white sandy beaches which you'll find all around the coast of Harris and Lewis.

Take home a beautiful souvenir of your visit from one of the wonderful galleries and craft markets.

Our onsite staff are on hand throughout your stay and will be happy to recommend things to do and places to visit around the island.
