The first Highland Games are thought to have taken place as far back as 1314 – Ceres Games of Fife – and although they have changed a bit since then, traditional Highland Games continue to be a popular attraction for visitors as well as locals.
Stand by the sidelines, or if you’re feeling up to it, get involved with various field and track events, listen out for traditional bagpipes and even local Pipe Bands at some of the bigger Highland Games throughout the country, and view traditional Highland Dancers as they compete in competitions.
Some of our favourite – not to be missed events – that always prove to be great entertainment include the ‘heavy events’ such as the hammer throw, tug-o-war and tossing the caber.
Although no Highland Games are identical, it guarantees to be a fun-filled family day out – experience delicious home baking and locally made produce, look out for the fun fairs to keep the kids amused (and the big kids, let’s not pretend…). Let’s not forget, there’s always plenty of food and drink to indulge in too – everyone is bound to be happy!
Highland Games kick off in May through ‘til September, with July & August being the busiest months that host some of the more prestigious events such as the Argyllshire Gatherings in Oban on 23rd August 2018 and the Cowal Highland Gathering in Dunoon from 23rd – 25th August 2018.
Visiting Scotland during Highland Games season this year? Get ready for a treat – no matter what! With the excitement of the competitions, the colours of the beautiful tartan kilts paired with a stunning Scottish backdrop (with, hopefully, some sun making an appearance) – it’s always an unmissable experience!
