Aodann: near Poolewe, on the shores of Loch Ewe, Scottish Highlands

Embrace what’s ‘Off the Eaten Path” Discover Local Delights: Langoustines, Gin, Craft Beer and Sweet Treats from Aodann

Situated near Poolewe on the shores of Loch Ewe, Aodann offers a unique gateway to enjoy the authentic flavours of the Scottish Highlands. From fresh langoustines and handcrafted gin to local craft beer and sweet treats, the region’s food and drink scene promises a memorable experience for every guest.

  1. Savour the Fresh Langoustines from Dry Island

While exploring the breathtaking highlands of Scotland, don’t miss the chance to enjoy the delicious langoustines from Dry Island. Known for their fresh and succulent taste, these local delicacies are a must-try for seafood lovers.

With such amazing fresh produce on our doorstep, we like to keep it simple. One of our favourite treats is to get a supply of fresh langoustines from Dry Island which is in the bay of Badachro. Serve them simply with home cooked chips and a bottle of Spanish Albarino which was made for seafood! The very first time we came to this corner of the highlands it was one of the meals we had, and the memory has stayed with us, so at Aodann we provide a big cooking pot specially for cooking them in!”

  1. Explore the Badachro Distillery

For gin enthusiasts, a visit to the Badachro Distillery is a fantastic experience. This local distillery offers a range of light and delicious gins that capture the essence of the region. Take a tour to learn about the distillation process and sample their exquisite gin, made with hand-picked botanicals. It’s a perfect way to unwind and enjoy a taste of Scotland.

  1. Try Ewebrew Craft Beer

If gin isn’t your thing, you’ll be pleased to discover our local craft beer, Ewebrew. Brewed just down the road on the shores of Loch Ewe, Ewebrew is gaining popularity in many local restaurants and cafes. With a variety of flavours inspired by the area’s rich history, including the Arctic Convoy, a tribute to Loch Ewe’s wartime role, there’s something for every beer lover to enjoy.

  1. Indulge in Sweet Treats from Sugar Croft Faerie

If you find yourself in Poolewe on a Tuesday, be sure to visit the local market. Here, you can indulge in sweet treats from Sugar Croft Faerie, known for their delectable Scottish tablet and other delightful confections. And if you happen to miss the market, don’t worry—at Aodann, we leave a little bag of their Scottish tablet just for you. It’s the perfect souvenir to take home or to enjoy as a sweet reminder of your visit.

Kabn, Ardkinglass Estate, Loch fyne

Capacity: Kabn 1 sleeps 2, Kabn 2 sleeps 2

Embrace whats ‘Off the Eaten Path’ at Kabn: When it comes to dining, Kabn has something incredibly special to offer…

Nestled within the expansive 12,000-acre Ardkinglas Estate, Kabn offers a serene escape just an hour from Glasgow and two hours from Edinburgh. Situated mere metres from the water’s edge and nestled in beautiful old growth trees on the shores of Loch Fyne, it is a truly private and magical place. Whether you are seeking peace and quiet or adventure, Kabn provides the perfect base for exploring the beauty of Argyll.

From left to right: Kabn accommodation
  1. Wild Kabn Kitchen

Our top recommendation—perhaps with a touch of bias—is the Wild Kabn Kitchen. Located just a 20-minute walk from your Kabn, this dining experience is nothing short of extraordinary. Michelin-trained Chef, William Hamer, crafts a tasting menu using local, organic ingredients, cooking everything over an open fire. The setting is equally enchanting: a Victorian greenhouse adorned with grapevines, creating a unique and intimate atmosphere.

Guests can choose to be as involved as they wish—watching Chef William work his magic over the flames or simply relaxing in privacy at their table. This immersive culinary journey goes beyond a traditional restaurant experience, making it a standout for special occasions. In fact, the magic of Wild Kabn Kitchen has been the backdrop for several marriage proposals over the past year, a testament to its unforgettable ambiance.

  1. Explore Argyll’s Culinary Delights

Kabn’s location in Argyll means you’re surrounded by a wealth of fantastic dining options. One of our favourites is Inver, a restaurant located about 25 minutes’ drive from the Kabn. This gem boasts a Green Michelin Star and is set right on the shores of Loch Fyne, overlooking the 15th-century ruins of Old Castle Lachlan. The combination of stunning scenery and exquisite food makes Inver a must-visit for any guest.

  1. Sip Local at Fyne Ales Brewery

For those who enjoy a good brew, we highly recommend a visit to Fyne Ales Brewery. Whether you choose to drive or take a (long) walk from Kabn, this local brewery offers a great selection of locally brewed beers. There’s nothing quite like relaxing outside your Kabn in the evening, a locally brewed beer in hand, as you watch for the resident seals in the Loch.

A favourite recipe: Cast Iron Cullen Skink with Trout and Wild Herbs (from Wild Kabn Kitchen) – View Here

Kabn at Ardkinglas Estate offers more than just a peaceful retreat; it’s a gateway to unforgettable ‘food and drink’ experiences. Whether experiencing the incredible Wild Kabn Kitchen, exploring Argyll’s spectacular scenery, or exploring local restaurants, Kabn allows you to fully immerse yourself in the local flavours and natural beauty of the region. With the prefect blend of peace and quiet, adventure, and exceptional cuisine, Kabn is the perfect destination for those looking to experience the best of Scotland’s “Off the Eaten Path”.

Borve Lodge, the Isle of Harris, Outer Hebrides

Capcity: The Broch sleeps 2, The Rock House sleeps 2

Embrace What’s Off the Eaten Path from Borve Lodge Estate

Borve Lodge Estate is located on the rugged west cost of the Isle of Harris and offers breathtaking views of the wild Atlantic Ocean. This incredible location not only provides a stunning backdrop for your stay but is also a gateway to some of Scotland’s finest (perhaps lesser known) culinary experiences in the Outer Hebrides.

While Harris may be a smaller part of the landmass that makes up the islands of Lewis and Harris, and with only two main towns—Tarbert in the north and Leverburgh in the south—it more than makes up for its limited number of eateries with the quality of its offerings.

From left to right: The Broch, Luskentyre beach and The Rock House accommodation
  1. Isle of Harris Brewery

Located in Leverburgh, the Isle of Harris Brewery has quickly become a local favourite. Situated on the site of the old Anchorage restaurant by the ferry pier, this newly refurbished spot is run by local couple Anna and Nick Helfrich. They brew their own beers and offer a tap room, deli, and restaurant serving locally sourced produce. From fish and chips to smoked salmon and delicious puddings, the small but well-curated menu offers excellent value for money. The brewery also serves bespoke Skydancer Coffee, a hit with guests at The Rock House and Broch, where it’s included in the welcome pack.

  1. Scarista House

Just a mile away from Borve Lodge, Scarista House is a charming small hotel that welcomes non-residents for dinner and breakfast. They offer a set menu but cater for allergies. The perfect spot for a local meal.

  1. Authentic Takeaway Experiences

These takeaway spots offer the perfect solution for those staying in self-catering properties or simply wishing to experience a meal outdoors. Imagine picking up a delicious, freshly prepared snack or meal and heading back to your cosy self-catering retreat at Borve Lodge, or, enjoying your meal right on the beach as you take in the stunning coastal views. These convenient options allow you to experience the flavours of Harris at your own pace, whether you’re planning a relaxed evening in or a picnic by the sea.

  1. Other notable eateries on Harris include:

Borve Lodge not only provides the perfect base for exploring Harris, but also offers access to some wonderful culinary experiences, perfect for those looking to discover the island’s hidden gems.
